AOBRDs – Are You Ready to Make the Switch to ELDs?

Are you still using AOBRDs?  Are you unhappy with your current ELD?  If so it may be time for you to make a switch!December marks one year since the ELD (Electronic Logging Device) Mandate went into effect for many fleets.  However, those fleets that were using AOBRDs (automatic on-board recording devices) received a compliance date of December 16, 2019.

Last year many companies scrambled to find a provider at the last minute and now after a year are realizing they may not have done the proper research and were contractually obligated to a company they knew nothing about.

If your fleet is currently operating AOBRDs – it is understandable that you’d want to stay with a familiar system as long as possible.  However, there are significant advantages to switching to and ELD now – rather than scrambling at the 11th hour.

Why Switch?

Making a switch now will ensure a smoother transition from AOBRDs to ELDs. Any new adjustment is bound to bring some minor kinks along the way, but transitioning to ELDs now gives fleet owners the freedom to address any issues and thoroughly train their drivers while still in the AOBRD grace period. This means they’ll be ahead of the curve and better equipped to use ELDs to benefit their business.

There are also cost saving benefits – such as lower fuel costs, state mileage tracking, and some companies even offer dash cams!

Another reason is at roadside inspections, there are different procedures for how drivers share information depending on whether they’re using ELDs or AOBRDs (information is shared via electronic file transfer on ELDs; on AOBRDs, drivers show the AOBRD display itself), and if drivers provide DOT officers with the wrong system information, there’s a chance a citation will be given due to the incompatibility. Using a mix of systems also means managers will need to monitor data on two separate interfaces, which could lead to back-office errors and duplication. Support for AOBRDs and their software are declining as ELDs become more prominent making troubleshooting increasingly difficult.
